| Nourish Your Immune System & Prevent Viruses | ||
With the increasing strength of viruses, the potential for becoming very sick is indeed a reality that faces modern civilization. Use of antibiotics and other conventional medicines is not showing the promise it once did in the battle against the bug. Fortunately, there are strategies that may help people fight these super bugs, including lifestyle approaches to support our bodies' defences. An essential element is optimising nutrition, which supports a strong immune system. Deficiencies in certain nutrients may affect an individual's immune system. Studies have found that higher dietary intake of nutrients such as vitamins C, A, and E actually increase the number of immune cells in the body. These immune cells are important components of our bodies' internal defences against viruses, bacteria and pathogens. Many studies have also shown that supplemental intake of vitamin C reduces the severity and duration of upper respiratory tract infections in humans, for prevention of, or faster recovery from the common cold. Beyond Chicken SoupBeyond just eating chicken soup and drinking plenty of fluids, one can eat plenty of foods rich in essential nutrients. Fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, lentils, whole grains, nuts and seeds, are extremely rich sources of antioxidant nutrients, phytochemicals and other plant components known to nourish the body and prevent disease via antioxidant and immune modulating effects. Be sure to include moderate intake of lean meat, fish or poultry for adequate intake of protein, which is vital for the immune system. Be sure to get your essential fats which are also associated with the body's defences. Raw nuts, seeds, fish fat or flaxseed oil are sources of essential fats. Consume them in moderation. Last but not least it doesn't hurt to take a good multivitamin and mineral supplement, rich in vitamin C, to fill any nutritional gaps in your diet, a sort of nutritional insurance. When choosing a supplement look for companies that follow GMP practices and have a reputable name like Natural Factors known for their exceptional quality control. All in all, common sense and a well balanced diet can go a long way in supporting immunity and improving overall health and well being. by: Vincent Ziccarelli MSc. (Clinical Nutritionist) |
