Conventional Ways to Keep Blood Pressure at a Minimum

  By Dr. Davon Jacobson, MD

High blood pressure is a disease that has seen a dramatic rise in recent generations. Widely thought as being a silent killer due to few symptoms developing, a sufferer may not realize they have a problem until struck by a stroke or cardiac arrest. A certain level of blood pressure is required to ensure blood continues to circulate throughout the body, however, a stressful life, physical exertions and underlying medical issues can increase this to a dangerous level. Fortunately, our understanding of the disease is becoming greater and various treatments have been developed that are successful, including home remedy.

Whether prescribed conventional drugs or not, patients are always urged to dramatically amend their lifestyles, and cut out any habits, addictions or choices that could trigger or develop high blood pressure. One such way to have a positive effect is to reduce stress. This is not always easy in this modern, fast-paced society of course, but there are steps that can be taken to control your response to stressful situations and thus diminish the potency of its effects. Methods of successful relaxation, vary from person to person. For some, meditation or yoga will be effective, whilst for others just going for a brisk walk will be sufficient. Or perhaps it could be getting some time away from the kids each day, so the involvement of friends and family is often key too.

Exercise is another way to help. Not only will it allow the body to develop better and increase strength, it will also provide a form of relaxation, thus helping reduce stress levels too. Exercises generally recommended include cycling, swimming and walking. If unable to get outside much, or restricted by extremely high blood pressure levels, simple cardiovascular routines can be introduced for you, often not involving anything more than a chair. In any case, it is always best to discuss exercise options with your physician before starting any routines.

Now, if this is sounding a little bit like too much hard work, worry not, it isn't all bad. Another home remedy said to be very effective with tackling high blood pressure is aromatherapy massage. Many practitioners are available who are more than happy to conduct home visits, but it could be quite a nice ideas to include your partner in these. Simply purchase some relaxing essential oils such as, rosewood, ylang-ylang and sandalwood, (this is expensive mind), and have these gently rubbed onto your back, arms and legs to soothe away the stresses and strains of the day.

Another excellent way to help lower blood pressure, particularly for those living alone or the elderly is to get a pet. Probably not best to get a snake or lizard, as these tend not to be so "cute n cuddly". However, research recently conducted has suggested having a pet such as a cat, dog or rabbit, can be more protective than many drugs regularly prescribed for treatment.
